The Little Things They Notice

The Little Things They Notice

I didn’t realise they were paying attention to this until one afternoon with my granddaughter.

She was outside pottering around the yard, moving sticks and leaves like she had some very important job to do, chatting away to herself in that little world kids disappear into when they’re completely lost in play.

Then I heard her say:

“Don’t worry, I’ll help.”

And it stopped me for a second.

Because suddenly it wasn’t just pretend play anymore. It was her repeating something she had seen. Something that had stayed with her. Something that made her want to be the person who helps.

It made me realise just how much our little ones take in, even when we think they’re not really watching.

They notice the helpers.

They notice the people who show up.

They notice what it looks like when someone steps in during the moments that matter.

That’s why Wear Orange Wednesday feels so special.

It’s a chance to celebrate the incredible SES volunteers who give so much to their communities, often quietly, without expecting recognition, simply because they care about helping others stay safe.

But it’s also a reminder of the little people watching from the sidelines with admiration in their eyes.

Because when children grow up seeing kindness, community spirit, and people helping one another, those values stick.

You can see it in the smallest moments.

When they put on their little orange outfit, you see it straight away. The pride. The confidence. That beautiful little feeling of:

“I’m helping too.”

It’s hard to explain unless you’ve seen it yourself.

But if you’ve got a little helper in your life, you probably know exactly what I mean.

Wear Orange Wednesday is about recognising the volunteers who do so much for our communities, but it’s also about inspiring the next generation to care for the people around them too.

Sometimes the smallest people are paying the closest attention.

And honestly, that’s a pretty beautiful thing.
